Schroeder Adds "Piece Of The Puzzle" To Reigning Conference Champions
Coming off a GSAC conference title in 2010, Head Cross Country Coach Zach Schroeder needed an additional "piece of the puzzle" to keep his Mustangs at the top of the conference. Schroeder believes he found it in Fairview, Pennsylvania native John Hurd.
Hurd, the top recruit for Schroeder's team already is an accomplished runner. His personal record in the 5K is 16:08, not to mention a 9:51 showing in the 3200m.
Hurd graduated from Fairview High School where he was the Pennsylvania Region 5 (Northwest Pennsylvania) Individual Champion. Hurd was a medalist at the State meet, finishing 7th overall.
When asked why he chose to travel across the country to attend The Master's College, Hurd said, "I honestly just know this is where God wants me for college and I really love the fact that I can develop my gifts with Christ as the focus."
As for his athletic goals, Hurd is content now to "just take a day at a time and enjoy running," but do not take that to mean he is not motivated. Hurd's desire is to one day "be a leader on the Master's team" as well as "medal at Nationals."
Hurd is leaning toward pursuing a computer science degree in his time at TMC. He is the son of David Hurd and Robin Wisner
This week, Hurd is preparing for his first collegiate race as both the men's and women's Cross Country teams are traveling to compete at the UC Irvine Invitational this Saturday. Hurd's goal for this Saturday is simple. "Run without limits while doing my best for the team."
