NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships

For TMC's Men's Distance Team, Thursday evening marked the beginning of the 2011 NAIA Outdoor Track & Field national Championships.  At 8:00 pm the gun went off for the prelim of the men's 3000m steeplechase.  Talented freshman Matthew Crichton was the sole representative of The Master's College in the event.  Unfortunately, the night proved to be a disappointment for the young athlete.  With a race less than indicative of his capabilities, Crichton was unable to advance to the final on Saturday.

Although the conclusion of Crichton's freshman campaign was not all he'd hoped for, Coach Schroeder is ecstatic about this new young talent.  "Matt had only run five steeples in his life going into last night.  He's also a freshman.  Just getting here is a pretty big deal," Coach Schroeder commented.  "Matt's had amazing progression.  He has a huge heart and is willing to do all the work.  He was more than capable of moving on to the finals last night, so we're disappointed, but not discouraged.  The national championships are something you have to experience in order to know how to prepare mentally.  We have that experience now.  The great thing about Matt is that I know he will respond well to the disappointment.  Every time he's had a poor race, he's always come back more focused.  This experience is just going to fuel the fire.  I'm excited to see what we're able to do over the course of the next four years.  Lord willing, Matt will be an eight time NAIA National Qualifier; that's pretty special."

Crichton was only one of two freshmen in the nation to qualify for NAIA Nationals in the steeplechase.

Tonight John Gilbertson and Anthony Pizzo will race the prelim for the men's 5000m.  Stay tuned for more results to come.
