SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – The Master’s College men’s cross country & track teams have added depth with the recent signing of Skyler Mikesell.
“I was excited about attending The Master's College after having an official visit to the campus,” commented Mikesell. “I'm from Indiana so I had to have a time where I could fly out to the school. Coach Schroeder blew me away and I knew he would be an excellent coach and mentor for me for the next few years of my adult life. The campus felt right, and I felt God was calling me to a school far away from home.”
The Fort Wayne, Indiana, native looks to make an impact in the collegiate running world as his specialties include the 8K for cross country, and the 800 meters, the 1500 meters and the 5000 for track and field.
When not competing, Mikesell looks to make an impact in the classroom with his plans to major in Business Administration for a career in marketing.
Previous to competing at The Master’s College, Mikesell crafted an impressive resume consisting of 2010 NHMLC Cross Country Championship honors, 2011 NHMLC Track Champion honors, being listed among the 2010-11 Sectionals Cross Country Champions, being named among Sectionals Track Champions from 2011-2014, named the semi-state runner up for cross country in 2012, placed 12th in the 4x800 relay at the 2013 Outdoor State Race, and placing eighth in the 4x800 relay at the Indoor State in 2014.
Already eyeing lofty goals, Mikesell hopes to qualify for NAIA Nationals on the cross country team and desires to qualify for NAIA Nationals for an individual event in track.
Commenting on Mikesell’s commitment, head coach Zach Schroder stated, “We are so thankful the Lord has allowed Skyler to be a part of our team. When he flew out all the way from Indiana, we realized pretty quickly that he was a match. The guys loved him and he has the mentality we look for in our athletes, humble and teachable. He really has a desire to be a key part of this team and we can't wait to have him.”
The Mustangs manufactured strong marks in 2013, by bagging a fourth consecutive GSAC title while producing four All-GSAC cross country athletes along the way: Matthew Crichton, John Hurd, Joshua Sherfey, and Tyler Tockstein.
Looking to another fruitful 2014-15 season, the Mustangs will be only graduating one senior and returning seven veterans.
Mikesell and the Mustangs will open 2014 the cross country season on September 6 at the UC Irvine Invitational.
