Costa Mesa, Calif. – The Master’s College men’s basketball team’s four-game winning streak came to a halt Tuesday night when the 10th-ranked Vanguard Lions got past the Mustangs with a 69-61 victory.
With the loss, the Mustangs’ 2013-14 record now sits at 18-10 overall and 6-7 in conference play. Vanguard’s record improves to 14-5 and 10-3 in the GSAC.
The Mustangs now sit in a three-way tie with No. 15 Concordia (19-10, 6-7 GSAC) and Biola (16-13, 6-7 GSAC) for fourth place in the GSAC.
"Vanguard's pressure really bothered us as it did in our first game with them," commented head coach Chuck Martin. "I'm proud of our guys for not quitting after being down 20 on the road. To get it back to 4 points with a minute to go and have a chance to win was a great effort. We just turned it over too much and didn't rebound well enough to win."
From start to finish, the Lions maintained a lead over the Mustangs spanning from as small as 2 points to as large as 20 points.
However, as Martin mentioned, Korey Anderson (Clovis, CA) brought the closed Vanguard’s lead to 65-61 with 1:38 left to play. But a silenced Mustang squad coupled with a pair of successful free through attempts by Vanguard’s Noel Larkins and DeAngelo Jones brought the final score to 69-61.
Anderson led the Mustangs in scoring and in rebounds by draining 15 points and pulling down 9 boards. Dominque Lanier (Lakewood, CA) scored 12 points, while Bernard Ireland (Rialto, CA) put up 11 more.
As a team, the Mustangs went 21-47 (44%) from the field, 4-15 (26%) behind the arc and 15-22 (68%) from the charity stripe.
Now, with one game left on the regular season schedule, the Mustangs will return to Bross Court for a Saturday night showdown against Hope International. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
