Santa Barbara, CA - Leif Karlberg and Devin Dyer combined for 35 points but it wasn't nearly enough as The Master's College weren't able to keep up with NCAA Division I UC Santa Barbara, losing 80-60 to the Gauchos in an exhibition Saturday evening.
Karlberg (Anchorage, AK) drained four three-pointers in the first ten minutes of play, keeping the Mustangs close at 20-14. However, the Gauchos answered with an 11-4 burst to extend their lead to 31-18 with 5:22 left in the opening half.
Then it was Dyer's turn. The Temecula native, using his teammate as an example, buried a pair of trifectas to pull the Mustangs within 36-30 at the 2:25 mark before the Gauchos responded with a long-range shot of their own to take a 39-30 advantage at halftime.
The Mustangs still trailed by that margin (49-40) with 16:02 remaining before the Gauchos started to exert themselves, using a couple of runs to put the game away. The first was a 6-0 skein to extend the lead to 55-40 and the second was decisive, a 10-0 burst to lengthen the margin to 68-47. The Mustangs never got closer than 15 points the rest of the way and the Gauchos enjoyed the largest lead of the evening at 80-54.
Karlberg, who hit five three-pointers, wound up with a game-high 19 points. Dyer was close behind with 16 points while Jason Logan (Spartanburg, SC) added 11 more and yanked down a game-high 11 rebounds.
Meanwhile, the Gauchos put five players in double figures, scoring 70 of the team's 80 points.
Following two games in as many nights, the Mustangs get to enjoy five days off, including Thanksgiving, before resuming play on Friday against Pomona Pitzer at the David Wells Classic in Claremont. A day later, the Mustangs close out play in the two-day event against Claremont.
