Phoenix, Ariz - Monday’s game didn’t count for or against the Mustangs 2012-2013 record, but The Master’s College men’s basketball team treated their exhibition contest against Grand Canyon University like a regular season game.
Putting up a solid showing against the NCAA Division II Antelopes, the Mustangs left Phoenix with 63-58 victory.
Shooting exactly 25% from the field over the opening 20 minutes, the Mustangs closed the half with a strong effort, trailing the Antelopes 23-21. GCU finished the half with a 30% accuracy.
TMC tied the game at 29-29 when Leif Karlberg (Anchorage, AK) sunk a three-pointer a minute and half into the second half. From that point, the Mustangs didn’t let the Antelopes take the lead for the rest of the half. After maintaining the lead, the Mustangs faced a scare when the resurgent GCU offense closed the gap to 56-59. But an array of free throws by Jason Logan (Spartanburg, SC), and Karlberg put the game out of reach at 63-58.
Karlberg paced the Mustangs in double figures with 18 points, while Devin Dyer (Temecula, CA) chipped in 15. The Mustangs finished the evening with a 32.7% accuracy.
The Mustangs return to regular-season action and Bross Gym on Saturday evening when they host West Coast Baptist in a 7:00 tip-off.
Grand Canyon University currently plays in the PacWest Conference- the same conference that former GSAC schools Azusa Pacific, Cal Baptist, Fresno Pacific, and Point Loma now compete in.
