Santa Clarita, CA -- On the eve of the GSAC Baseball Tournament, three members of The Master’s College baseball team have been recognized with all-conference honors.

Headlining the trio of Mustangs are outfielder/pitcher Steve Karkenny and shortstop Jonathan Popadics, both of whom earned All-GSAC kudos for the second consecutive year.

Karkenny led the club in eight offensive categories, including batting average (.366), hits (63), home runs (6), rbi (44), total bases (101), slugging percentage (.587), and stolen bases (25).  He finished second in the GSAC in stolen bases, third in doubles, rbi, and total bases, fifth in runs scored, and sixth in batting average.

The junior also distinguished himself on the mound this spring, developing into the conference’s best closer, notching seven saves and going 3-2 with a 1.21 earned-run average.

Meanwhile, Popadics enjoyed another outstanding season at the plate and in the field.  The junior tied Karkenny for the team lead in batting average and hits, and paced the club in runs scored (48), walks (30), and on-base percentage (.481).  He finished second in the GSAC in doubles, third in runs scored and stolen bases, and sixth in batting average.

He also flashed the leather in the field, making only eight errors in 243 chances, featuring a team-high 165 assists, for a sparkling .967 fielding percentage.

Shackelford’s selection was a fitting honor for the most versatile player on the team who found his niche at third base in 2014.  He led the team in at-bats (183), doubles (19), and sacrifice flies (5).  He hit .339 and led the GSAC in doubles.

The 12th-ranked Mustangs open play in the GSAC Tournament, hosted by San Diego Christian, on Thursday when they play 22nd-ranked Vanguard in a 9:00am start at Grossmont College in El Cajon.
