Mustangs Wrangle GSAC Honors

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – The GSAC’s Player of the year, Pitcher of the year, Coach of the Year, Baseball All-GSAC and Gold Glove Teams have been announced.
The GSAC Player and Pitcher of the Year honors were awarded to Steven Karkenny (Chatsworth, CA) and A.J. Work (Boise, ID). Head coach Monte Brooks earned the GSAC’s coach of the year award.
Brooks led the Mustangs to their first GSAC championship since 2003.
Karkenny produced a .366 (68-for-186) batting average for the regular season with nine home runs, 44 runs scored, and 25 stolen bases, and led the GSAC with 21 doubles and 52 RBI.
Work led the conference with a 2.67 ERA and 10 wins, while striking out 65 batters.
Nine position players were named to the GSAC Gold Glove Team for their defensive success on the baseball field. Of those nine players, Spencer Downs (Kelso, WA), Sam Robison (San Juan Capistrano, CA), Cody Harris (Lakewood, CA), Karkenny, and Work represented The Master’s College.
Finally, John Popadics (Boise, ID), Tyler Elrod (Modesto, CA), and Tommy Kister (Saugus, CA) Work, and Karkenny were selected to be on the GSAC’s All-Conference team.
With one of their most successful regular-seasons behind them (37-15, 25-11 GSAC), the No. 7 nationally ranked Mustangs now turn their attention to the conference tournament which starts Thursday on Reese Field. The top-seeded Mustangs take to the diamond at 12:00 PM against Arizona Christian.
