SANTA CLARITA, Calif – The red-hot Mustang baseball squad extended their dominating record to 19-5 (8-2 GSAC) Thursday afternoon during a double header against the visiting San Diego Christian Hawks. The Mustangs were on the board early in the first inning as senior Tanner Leighton stole second and scored off freshmen Stephen Karkenny’s triple to left center. Later in the first, Karkenny scored on a beautifully scripted hit to right field by sophomore Joe Riddle.
The Mustangs pushed their lead over the Hawks in the fourth as senior Bryan Lucas singled to right field allowing freshmen Caleb Halverson to advance to second on a passed ball after entering as a pinch runner. Immediately after, junior Spencer Downs doubled to left field allowing Halverson to capitalize. Sophomore Cody Harris then perfectly doubled to left field causing Downs to score and consequently moving the Mustang lead to 4-0.
The highlight of the day’s first meeting came in the 6th as a series of hits earned the Mustangs a 6-0 lead. Riddle singled to center field and advanced to second as Lucas grounded out to SDCC’s Lucas Whitmore. After advancing to third as Spencer Downs stole second, Riddle was the next contributor to the first round victory. Later in the 6th, Cody Harris again helped the Mustangs as he scored off a single to center field from freshmen Jonathan Popadics.
Holding a commanding lead of 7-0 entering the 7th, Joe Riddle doubled to left center allowing Chris Talley to score. Riddle then advanced to third after a wild pitch and captured an unearned run off a passed ball.
With the score at 9-0 at the 9th, the San Diego Christian Hawks finally made an appearance on the scoreboard when Sean Sweeney (SDCC) scored on an error. Later, San Diego’s Cedric Bogan scored on a final effort by the Hawks, ending the game at 9-2.
In similar fashion to the day's first meeting, the Mustangs were first on the board in inning number one as Tanner Leighton and Stephen Karkenny scored off a booming hit to center field from Chris Talley. With a score of 2-0, the Mustangs showed more life in the 3rd frame as Jonathan Popadics scored an earned run when Karkenny launched a hit out to left field.
The Master’s College dominance continued when Leighton scored on an error stringing the Mustang’s lead to 4-0.
San Diego made an impressive effort in the 6th inning, evening out the score of the day’s second meeting to 4-4.
The Hawk’s Jesus Castellanos singled to left center allowing Tyler Bailey to put up their first score of the day. Victor Martinez (SDCC) homered to right field, allowing the visiting duo of Casetllenos and Bogan to score in front of him to tie up the game.
In a game that was slated for 7-innings, the opponents needed extra frames to decide the nightcap. The Mustangs were relatively dormant until the 9th inning when Tanner Leighton tripled to left field and scored off an error from the visiting shortstop. This costly error proved to be what the Mustangs needed to lift them out of an unexpected late-game rut.
The Master's will visit the Hawks this Saturday down in sunny San Diego. Looking to extend their record,
Mustang head coach Monte Brooks and his squad will battle out a double header beginning at 11:00 AM.
