Let's Play Two!

April 3rd, 2012

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Game 1:
SANTA CLARITA, Calif – Just a day after beating conference rival Azusa Pacific, The Master’s College swept visiting La Sierra University (3-24-1) in twin-bill Tuesday afternoon at the tune of 8-1 apiece in Placerita Canyon.

The wins gave the Mustangs (26-14, 13-11 GSAC) a much needed non-conference break and confidence boost as many on the squad received valuable playing time.

While the Mustangs held a commanding lead in both showings, many of the days runs came later in game.  Starting in the first inning, Tanner Leighton put the Mustangs on the board by scoring off on an un-earned run caused by an error from La Sierra’s pitcher Scott Makorow.  With game-play relatively silent until the 4th, the Mustangs added to their lead when Spencer Downs doubled to left field earning an RBI while driving in James Sloan for the score.

The Mustangs put game one on ice in the 5th inning when the duo of Steven Karkenny and Sam Robinson sparked a rally scoring off a single to right center from Chris Talley.  Immediately following, Mustang designated hitter Joe riddle crossed home off an unearned run caused by an error on second base.

In the same inning James Sloan advanced the Mustangs lead to 6-0 as Spencer Downs grounded out to second base.  Later, Ryan Shackelford advanced to third base off an error, allowing Spencer Toth to score putting the Mustangs at 7-0.  The Mustangs completed the first of two when Ryan Shackelford scored off a long-out to right field from Bryan Mitchell.

La Sierra avoided a shut-out in game one in the 7th when Michael Hinojos was hit by a pitch with bases loaded, allowing Sanchez to cross home base ending the day at 8-1.

Game 2:
The Mustangs continued their dominating course of action in game two as they got on the board quickly in the 3rd by a homer from Tanner Leighton which gave Cody Harris the green light to cross home.

With the Lead at 2-0 in the fourth, Specner Downs singled out to right field enabling Joe Riddle to extend the lead to 3-0.

In similar fashion to game one, the Mustangs came alive in the fifth as the squad posted five unanswered runs.  Making haste, Spencer Toth drilled a homer to left field giving himself and Cody Harris the score.  Sitting at 5-0, Bryan Mitchell doubled to left field putting Tanner Leighton in position to contribute to the Mustang’s lead.  Finally, Joe Riddle secured the day at 8-0 in the 5th as the designated hitter homered to right field allowing Byran Mitchell to cross home.

The Mustangs allowed only one run in the day’s second showing as Michael Rojas scored late in the 7th when Wong walked off a pitch delivered by Cody Harris.

The Mustangs (26-14, 13-11 GSAC), who are ranked at 24 out of 25 in the NAIA polls, will host another double header against Cal State San Marcos Cougars (21 – 13, 1-0) on Thursday, April 5th.  The twin bill is set to begin at 12:00 pm.
