Costa Mesa, CA — Willie Nelson’s lyrics “On the road again, oh I just can’t wait to get on the road again” seem appropriate for a Mustang team that must have been wondering if it would ever hit the road at all.

After playing its first 14 games at Reese Field, The Master's College took to the road and won its first away game 4-2 at Vanguard on Friday afternoon. With the win, the Mustangs (10-5 overall, 6-4 GSAC) moved into sole possession of first place in the GSAC.

A.J. Work (Boise, ID) continued to pitch well for the club, throwing seven innings, allowing one run on five hits.  The senior improved to 4-1 on the season and lowered his ERA to a sparkling 1.45.

The Mustangs went ahead 2-1 in the fourth on a Joe Riddle (Bakersfield, CA) rbi double and Cody Harris’ (Lakewood, CA) sacrifice fly.

Vanguard outhit The Master’s seven to six, but in the fifth, the Mustangs proved that to score, a hit isn’t always necessary.  Caleb Halverson (Temple City, CA) walked, stole second, advanced to third on a fielder’s choice, and then scored on a wild pitch, putting the Mustangs up 3-1.

“(We) were just able to execute well and capitalize on their little mistakes,” said Halverson.

Tommy Kister (Saugus, CA) pitched the eighth and ninth innings for the Mustangs, picking up his third save.  Protecting a 4-2 lead in the ninth, Kister retired the side in order, striking out two.

The Mustangs will be back in action tomorrow in Costa Mesa for a 11:00 AM doubleheader against the Lions.
