Mustangs Outlast Stags

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. -- Chris Talley and Jonathan Popadics drove in two runs apiece and The Master’s College claimed their seventh win of the season Tuesday afternoon on Reese Field, defeating Claremont 6-4. Playing their 10th straight game at home, the Mustangs improved to 7-3.
Daniel Sheaffer (Mount Airy, NC) started on the mound for the Mustangs, pitching four innings and chalking up his second win of the season, extending his record to 2-0. The lefthander struck out four Stags and allowed only one hit, a solo homer in the top of the first by Scott Witte. Dalton Thompson (Riverside, CA) followed up by allowing one run in the top of the fifth. Tucker Richardson (Modesto, CA) took the hill in the sixth and allowed two runs, but worked out of a bases-loaded jam to end the inning. Tommy Kister (Saugus, CA) pitched a scoreless seventh and eight innings, while Cody Harris (Lakewood, CA) moved over from third base to close the game in the ninth. He allowed no runs and recorded the save, his first of the season.
The Mustangs scored in the first inning when Talley (Simi Valley, CA) brought home Steven Karkenny (Chatsworth, CA) with a sacrifice fly. It wasn’t until the fifth, however, that the Mustangs scored another run. Once again, Talley plated Karkenny, this time with a game-tying single to left field and Ryan Shackelford (Murrieta, CA) followed with a double that brought home Spencer Downs (Kelso, WA), moving the Mustangs in front 3-2
The Mustangs scored their final three runs in the sixth on a Popadics' (Boise, ID) two-run triple to left-center field and a Downs' sacrifice fly.
Beginning on Friday, the Mustangs return to GSAC play, hosting No. 11 Concordia in a three-game set. Despite the Eagles' slow start (3-4 overall), Kister and Popadics both identified the Eagles as a major competitor for the conference title, describing the next three games as very important to the Mustang season.
