Warriors Beat Up Mustangs
Chris Plance pitched a complete-game six-hitter and Timothy Leary belted a home run and drove in three runs to lead Westmont past The Master's College 6-1 Thursday afternoon on Reese Field.
The Warrior win avenged Wednesday's 3-1 loss to the Mustangs and evened the clubs' four-game series at one game apiece. The Mustangs fell to 8-12 in the GSAC and 17-16 overall.
Plance was superb en route to his third (3-1) victory of the season, setting down the Mustangs in order three times while giving up his only run in the bottom of the ninth.
That tally was set up by a one-out plunking of Jared Otto who promptly stole second base and scored on Ben Ives' double to left-center field. But, that was it as the Mustangs never had more than one hit in any inning. They had a chance to do some damage in the bottom of the third when they put runners on second and third with one out but Plance buckled down and got a foul out and a ground out to get out of the inning.
Meanwhile, Tyler Bersano didn't escape too many jams. He gave up a run in the top of the first and three more in the third when Leary drove in his first run on a double to center field.
Two innings later, Leary was back at it, hitting a one-out, two-run homer over the right-center field fence for a 6-0 lead.
Bersano (4-5) allowed nine Warrior hits and six runs in seven innings of work.
The four-game series now moves to Santa Barbara on Saturday for a doubleheader.
